I usually do my own itinerary, I am my own travel agent, however, I felt that this hiking tour along the West Coast of New Zealand had created a plan I couldn't beat. I wasn't sure I would like being on a tour with a group of strangers, however, things just clicked. It was a small group and we just seemed to click. The guides were awesome setting the tone that made the trip so thrilling.

After the southern Patagonia trip with Active Adventures, we wanted to complete the experience and see Northern Patagonia. We did not expect to equal the south but were totally blown away. It was infinitely more than we expected, no doubt due to the detail planning. Each day, each stop was a true amazing experience.

Excellent trip guides throughout the trip. Very informative, interesting, attentive and helpful individuals. Our group chose to do the W Trek with the backpacking and refugios in Torres del Paine. Completely worth it for the hiking -- just be prepared, refugios are like hostels with food. We rented equipment and it was good quality and condition. Most of the rest of the hotels on trip aren't notable -- they tend to be a mixture of moderate to budget level hotels. However, the experience of Patagonia and hiking (in all types of weather!) was perfect!

I had a great trip with Active Adventures on the South Island. New Zealand has been on my bucket list. This trip fulfilled all my hopes and dreams of exploring New Zealand in a very short time. I will remember this trip for the rest of my life.

    Big Picture: Excellent, exceeded expectations.

To many options in detailed tabs, so here is everything I want to say:

    - The Eco Thamel Resort in Karthmandu was more than adequate.

    - A little disappointed that there the chief guide (once we split from the ECB half of the team) was not a native English speaker. Occasionally shree's English was hard to understand. But he did a fine job.

    - And apparently he (Shree) did NOT have a SAT phone, which we were told would be the case. At a few places where we were a distance from the closest village if something bad had happened , then there would have been a delay getting help.

    - And the assistant guide's (Bidek?) English was not good at all. If something had happened to Shree, life might have been complicated.

    - Food: Adequate options and definitely enough. We were told that there would be no meat once we left Kathmandu and that was the case. Perhaps recommending to us to bring some jerky would have been helpful, as the all vege diet got a little tiresome.

    - Before we left home AA also recommended to NOT eat meat in Kathmandu (we arrived 2 days before the trip officially started). That was wrong. AA took us to some GREAT restaurants in Kathmandu and we hand some great meals;- Pizza with chicken and Australian lamb.

I loved the Alps to Ocean bike ride. The scenery is exceptional and beautiful. However, our 2 guides showed a wealth of knowledge and experience, and this translated into a number of great decisions, which ensured our group could capitalize on the best possible biking experience. The accommodation and food are excellent. Best moments? Too many the mention. Highly recommended.

This is my 4th trip with Active. All my trips have been exceptional and I still talk about them to my friends. All the guides have been great and always happy to assist if needed.
I love that we do some activity every day. Some have been challenging even for a fit 67 yr old but facing the challenge and accomplishing the bike ride or hike is the best feeling.
I can't wait to plan my next trip

This is my second trip with Active Adventures and once again, the trip itself was outstanding! Our guide, Pepo from GalaKiwi was enthusiastic, fun, knowledgeable and managed to make the transition from one activity to another (one Island to another) appear seamless! That last piece is what stands out to me the most...the distances we traveled, the various modes of transportation, the hotels, restaurants, activities flowed from one to the other with almost zero down time. Pepo never seemed to tire of our questions, and genuinely shared in our excitement whenever we would notice something new (e.g., our first of 1000 iguanas, or our first of 800 sea lions, etc.) We were fortunate that the weather was perfect and we were able to see every single animal that was mentioned - from the dozens of hammer head sharks at kicker rock to Flamingos, a penguin, and seahorses on Isabela.

My only negatives are related to the pre-trip planning provided by Active Adventures itself. The packing list provided was rather "generic" and not customize for the time of year we were in the Galapagos. For my trip in 2007, it seemed that Active Adventures was available to answer most any question I had. This time, prior to the trip, my questions were either not answered or I was informed I needed to do find the answer myself. The final call with Active Adventures was with someone who had no idea of the details of the trip and essentially read from the same FAQ's that were provided on the website.
    Eg.,
What are mask requirements? "We don't know, you'll need to go to website xyz"
We arrive the day prior to the trip and are staying at the same hotel as we will be for the trip, can we keep our same rooms? "You'll need to call the hotel yourself."
Can you confirm the currency in Ecuador is the USD? "No, I think you'll need to exchange money once you get there...oh wait, yeah, it looks like you are right, that they do use USD there."

I would do a trip with GalaKiwi in a heartbeat. I'm not sure I will go through Active Adventures again...I'm not sure of the value they provided to the process that was above and beyond an REI trip or a National Geographic trip.

We've never been disappointed by our adventures with Active and our trip to Costa Rica was no exception. Our guide, Sterling, was outstanding. He explained much about the history and culture of Costa Rica, and he had an amazing ability of spotting wildlife in the jungle and trees. I was able to take some great photos! Two wonderful cooking demonstrations gave us a chance to experience bits of Costa Rican life. Every detail was covered, and Sterling always kept us informed, so we were prepared for each new activity.

While Active trips are always well planned and carried out, the personal attention guides like Sterling have given us keep us signing up for more trips.
