We were so impressed with our guides Pim and Astrid, they were professional, personable, witty, prepared—and fabulous chef’s!!! The hiking was so wondrous- the rainforest was like being in fairyland, the fjord was spellbinding with its mountains tracing to the heavens and the sea beneath you. So much history, as well as learning about indigenous and invasive species and plants. Everyone we met was so kind and helpful! I highly, without reservation, would recommend this trip.

Well, I am sad to be back home again after our wonderful Kauri trip with Claire and Holly. This was our third trip with Active, having previously gone on the Tui tour of the South Island with Amanda and Clara in early 2017, and then the Condor tour of Patagonia with Cahit, Anna, and Cristian in early 2018.

I can't say enough good things about Active. On every trip, our guides have been extremely fun, while at the same time very safety conscious and professional. And the food was delicious! It says something that I am three years away from that first trip and have no problem remembering the names of these wonderful people.

As with our previous tours, the itinerary was well-balanced between getting us out in the beautiful natural scenery of New Zealand, while at the same time allowing us enough time to recover so that we enjoy the trip. From sandboarding, to snorkeling, to mountain biking, to tubing a subterranean river, to hiking, we had a blast. I have been asked what the highlight of the trip was, and I struggle to come up with an answer I can stand by. There are too many superlative moments to choose from. It doesn't get better than that.

We have made friends again on this trip, as we have on previous trips, and I look forward to keeping in touch. And I look forward to my next Active Adventure. Thanks again for another wonderful vacation!

I highly recommend Active Adventures for the traveler who is willing to put in the active work, but who may not have the time or resources to do advance planning. As a solo traveler, I was able to do and go places I might not have been able to do on my own. The whole process from initial booking to trip start, was easy, straightforward, and guides very communicative. Your questions were answered quickly and responses were thoughtful informative. The trip itself was amazing - each location was thoughtfully chosen and the content of the trip was well executed from start to finish. From lodging, to driving time, to meals, to adventures, to activity, to rest time. I have only wonderful words to say about our two guides, Ashleigh and Sam, both amazing women full of knowledge, charm, laughs, fierceness, mad hiking skills, and leadership ability. Ashleigh, your driving and impeccable planning was on point. Sam, I gained some pounds because of you. Food was amazing. Again, such an excellent way to see the South Island. To the whole crew, it’s Business Time! Thanks for the laughs and new found friendships!

This trip was most remarkable because of the people with whom we traveled and the diversity of wildlife we encountered close up. We had a small group of 4 adventurers along with the guides and from the first meeting we bonded into a remarkably functional family unit, doing everything together throughout the trip, even any unscheduled time. On these trips we have had the opportunity to meet the most interesting and wonderful people. Of course the scenery was awe inspiring, the hikes exhilarating, the guides thoughtful of our every need, and the food and accommodations unbeatable, but I expected that. It was the people in our group and the people we encountered throughout our trip that made it a joyous trip.

We had a wonderful two week tour thanks mostly to three things ~ the positive leadership from our head guide Alvaro (who also had a strong supporting cast in Cristian, Javier and Aime), the great group of people who were our travel mates and the (mostly) cooperative weather that allowed us to experience the beauty of the area.
Our guides were exceptional in many ways. It was impressive to watch their "people skills" in action. Whether it was instilling confidence or gently reminding us to be aware of others, they quickly helped the group to develop a sense of family. In addition, their knowledge of the area was very apparent. They were very eager to answer any and all questions. Although the group was almost twice their age (and, in one case, three times as old!), I truly appreciated NOT ONCE being treated any differently than from someone my own age.
Even though, as mentioned, I think the guides played some part in bringing our group together, we were fortunate to start with a GREAT group of people!! Lots of laughs and lots of fun!
We, personally, were thankful that the sun decided to join us on many of our days or for, at least, part of the day. For us, the sun intensifies nature's colors and, subsequently, our experience.

Always a little daunting with an unknown group of travellers in a faraway land. We immediately felt comfortable with our group thanks to Katie and Emily, our guides. Nothing could not be handled by these two. Hikes met our needs and expectations. Always an option to choose. Our itinerary had to be changed due to flooding and closed roads but the alternative turned out to be amazing. We always felt that Active was looking out for our best interests. Would highly recommend Active Adventures for future travellers.

My wife and I were on the Manuka trip in February, 2020. For some fluke reason, we were the only 2 people booked for most of the trip, but there were 3 others booked for the Fiordland portion of the trip. Caleb was our private guide for the portion of the trip we were alone, and he was awesome. Polite, pleasant, knowledgeable, and an excellent driver and cook. Irene joined us for the Fiordland portion of the trip and was also fabulous. We were in Fiordland when a freak storm dumped a meter of rain in 60 hours. We were about to go into Milford Sound when the road was closed, and basically we were stuck in Southland with no way out. Caleb and Irene were extremely calm, capable and professional and managed to find things for us to do despite the circumstances. Although they certainly had help and guidance from the Operations people for Active Adventures in Queenstown, I know of very few young people who could have handled the situation as well as they did. I have tremendous respect for Active Adventures, the way all of this was handled, and would recommend the organization to anyone. We were thinking of going to Hawaii next January, but I think we are going to return to NZ instead.

I was originally scheduled to take this trip 3 years ago, but a sudden issue with my back and urgent surgery caused a cancellation, and it has taken me 3 years to regain enough strength and stamina to go. Boy, was it ever worth the wait! The landscapes, people, wildlife and simply the experience of covering so much ground on my own two feet were truly uplifting. Our tour leader, Gustavo, had just the right mix of leadership skills, humor, empathy, and detailed knowledge of what we were seeing and doing. I'd travel with him again in a heartbeat! The accommodations were well-chosen, the local guides knowledgeable and friendly, and my fellow travelers quickly bonded into a supportive group of what felt like life-long friends. We cheered each other on, and shared individual small victories and also birthday celebrations. I enjoyed the variety of activities and sites. All the arrangements were smooth and it was no effort to get from one place to the next. This was my second trip with Active Adventures and the only question now is which one will be the third.

I absolutely loved the Tui Trip. Claire was an excellent driver and Ruby was an excellent cook. Both women were very friendly, energetic, and knowledgeable about the area and wildlife. We had a very special trip as there were only three people on our trip, so it felt like we each had a guide.

We did 2 tours (4 weeks) with Active Adventures, and then had an RV for 1 week on our own. Renting the RV was fun, but it made us realize just how easy Active Adventures had made it for us! We covered so much more ground doing the guided tour. We also didn't have to waste time figuring out things like: where to get fuelled up, where was the next bathroom, where to get groceries, where to camp, what was a good excursion and what was the best company to book it through. We also didn't have to do any cooking or cleaning! That's a holiday! We were so glad we did the guided tour! Thanks to Ruby, Kaleb, Sam & Ash! They gave us a full Kiwi experience!
