As a repeat independent traveler in New Zealand (5th trip in the past 20 years), the Kiwi was my first organized NZ tour and first ever hiking-focused tour. I selected the Kiwi for the comprehensive South Island itinerary, activity level 2-3 rating and small group travel. Our experience with exceeded all expectations! Everything was well-organized from pick-up on Day 1 to airport drop-off on Day 14. Communications before and during the trip were detailed and helpful. Our guides, Katie and Emily were fantastic - they clearly enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the South Island and Kiwi culture with visitors - and their positive energy was infectious. Each day's activities were well-executed and the meals and snacks were tasty and nutritious.

Our trip went well beyond my expectations. We had never been to New Zealand and were happy to have guides to show us where to hike, and take care of all the logistics of lodging, meals, and driving. Over the course of two weeks, I learned so much about the Maori culture, and environmental and natural history, a little more seeping in every day as we walked in the fern forests, along the rocky coastlines, and through the glaciated mountains. Our guide Caleb shared his enthusiasm for the beauty and the ethos of caring for the environment and the birds. He was a great driver and a great cook, and seemed to key in on what part of the experience we might most appreciate. He really paid attention to details, and he knew when to let us explore and see things for ourselves. Part way through the trip we got more tour members, and an additional guide, Irene. She was also a great cook, organizer, and hiking guide. Both of our guides were excellent company. When excessive rain and road damage prevented us from going into Milford Sound, they found hikes and activities for us in places that were both beautiful and safe. When we eventually made our way to Aoraki Mt Cook, the scenery was stunning, and we were able to hike up to and a little beyond Sealy Tarns. In all, the landscape was amazing to see and learn about, the lodgings were comfortable, and usually in amazingly beautiful settings, the meals were delicious, and the entire experience was wonderful, thanks to our wonderful guides! Thank you!

I never actually trained for any of the hikes prior to the trip and I survived! I really enjoyed the meals cooked by Claire and Holly it just made the trip feel even more personal, almost like family. I’ve never been on a trip like this before and I’ll never forget it. I experienced a ton of firsts and really pushed limits. I want to personally thank Claire for keeping my spirits up when things seemed tough. This trip definitely had a wide range of activities to keep you busy and not bored of the same thing. I’d definitely come back again for another adventure.

There is nothing that makes me happier than being out on the trail and the simplicity that accompanies the routine of a quick but good breakfast, walking the majority of the day through places I have never been, seeing wildlife and scenery that I am in awe of, challenging myself physically, and at the end of the day, sharing memories with friends, sleeping well, and getting up to start all over again!

We did 4 weeks with Active Adventures and then had an RV for 1 week on our own. Doing the RV was fun, but it made us realize how easy Active Adventures had made things for us. We covered so much more ground with Active, and we didn't have to fuss things like filling the gas tank, getting groceries, where to camp, what was the best excursion to do in the area etc. We were so glad we did the guided tour!

The Puma trip was a fantastic experience and a lot of fun. We had such a good group with a terrific guide (Mayra) and the scenery was absolutely magnificent. Lots of laughs too! I'm really glad I went.

As my family will attest, I am not someone who typically writes raving reviews, but this trip deserves 5+ stars and glowing comments! I cannot stop thinking about and talking about how incredible the trip was. I expected to see some amazing animals and plants, but I had not anticipated the wealth of easily-conveyed information I would learn about the eco-system, geology, history, and plant and animal life in each of the Galapagos islands that we visited. The trip was packed with adventures and explorations, yet all aspects went amazingly smoothly. From meals to lodging to the various forms of transportation we used every day to the bikes and snorkel gear. Our guide Pablo is a true gift to the Galapagos, we leave as better, more reflective, more informed individuals as a result of the energy and knowledge he pours into his work. A life-changing trip that I enthusiastically recommend to individuals and families of all ages. If you fortunate enough to have the time and resources to make this journey, I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Wonderful variety of adventures, accommodation and activities. Our guides were professional, friendly and knowledgeable, they felt more like members of the group. Very accommodating to different levels of fitness and interest, that said the Tui trip is definitely best suited to people who regularly hike and have a good base level of fitness. The Siberian Valley is a must see. Best way to see the South Island, now I know what bits I want to go back to see after I do the North Island trip. 😊 On a practical note, sandflies are no joke and defiantly bring or pick up repellent before the trip starts, you will be more comfortable.

We had an incredible time on our South Island Rimu adventure with Ash and Sam! After completing the North Island Kauri Adventure, we were excited to see what the south island had to offer and we were certainly not disappointed. Ash and Sam did an outstanding job of sharing their incredibly beautiful country with us and ensuring our Kiwi adventure was everything we had hoped for. We are so glad we chose Active Adventures to show us what NZ is really about.

We had an amazing North Island Kauri trip with Kaleb and Ruby and came away with a real sense of both Kiwi and Maori culture and history. The north island was incredibly beautiful and we had a fantastic adventure with Kaleb and Ruby who were both excellent guides (genuine, fun and entertaining) and a tremendous wealth of knowledge. Definitely glad we chose Active Adventures to show us NZ rather than trying to do it on our own.

To celebrate my 60th birthday I wanted to take a very special, active adventure to somewhere I had not been. This was the PERFECT trip for experiencing the diversity and beauty of the south Island, while getting some decent exercise in! Our family, like many, represented a mix of activity/fitness levels, and the options offered allowed each of us to challenge our own abilities as we were comfortable, while taking in the beauty and grandeur of this amazing country. The food was excellent, the range of accommodations was interestingly varied and comfortable, and the guides were superb in their knowledge, encouragement, leadership, putting everyone at ease and allowing each person the chance to decide how to make this trip all they had hoped it would be. We had lots of fun, lots of laughs, lots of challenges, lots of sand fly bites (that we wore as a badge of honor for our hard hiking efforts!), and lots of photos. We've done a number of other trips with similar organizations that were wonderful, very well coordinated trips, and so we came to this one with some expectations - and our guides Button & Brogan, and Active Adventures met them all!

The trip to the Galapagos with Active Adventures far exceeded my expectations. The trip logistics were synchronized perfectly. Our accommodations were very comfortable, the food was very good and the excursions were very informative, interesting and well organized. I really appreciated the local flavor of our trip - small hotels, indigenous food choices and a native guide. Our guide, Pablo's passion for the Galapagos flora and fauna was contagious. His wealth of information and first hand experience is impressive and interesting and he's able to share it in a way that doesn't feel like a lecture. Everyday was an adventure and I liked the variety of activities, ie. biking, hiking, snorkeling and kayaking. The trip was absolutely amazing - a good group and an excellent guide. I came home with a better understanding and commitment to the value of conservation and native and indigenous plants and animals.

This trip exceeded my expectations! Elder, Ellie and Lucy were the best guides ever. Their knowledge of all things New Zealand was amazing, and their sense of humor, kindness and patience made the trip so enjoyable. The biking was so much fun, with changing terrain every day. The options to shorten or lengthen the rides (with no judgment!) was very helpful. The mountains, rivers, lakes and waterfalls we saw every day were beyond beautiful. I would highly recommend this trip to biking enthusiasts.

Our family absolutely loved the Rimu trip! We feel like we REALLY saw the South Island. Each day was truly an adventure, and the mix of activities was super. The leaders, Clare and Irene, were amazing - truly there are no words to describe their enthusiasm, attention to detail, kindness, skill, and good humor! They made the trip an exceptional experience. If you are considering this trip - go!

What a spectacularly beautiful country. Loved hiking in the rain forests and along the windy coast. Hikes were geared to my level, and with a little push, never too much for me. Hard to choose what I Iiked best but Doubtful sound and the kayaking and dolphin sightings rank high on my list. Excellent food, catered to my needs, loved my cheery and very informed guides, Katie and Emily.
Highly recommend.
