One can only imagine the beauty or the mountains, plains, and waterways until you see them yourself. I couldn't get over the pristine waters, and awe inspiring landscapes. The guides were exceptional, leading us on numerous hikes through the tropical forests and up and down several mountains. The trails were wide and well maintained. Our guides prepared delicious meals specific to our dietary needs, and when we did dine out, the restaurants were exceptional. This is a must adventure for everyone.

Active Adventures did a tremendous job coordinating this trip - lots of moving parts and logistics! I really enjoyed the scenery, the company, our fabulous trip leader; the accommodations were just as described and we ate some great food. Perhaps the weather could have been a little better, but that's Patagonia for you! Nothing could be done to guarantee all great weather all the time. I will definitely book another trip with Active.

As someone who has planned plenty of trips and activities, I was really impressed with the level of thought that went into this experience. It was well-paced each day with a mix of athletic activities and scenic drives to the next destination. The guides made a jam-packed itinerary feel energizing rather than rushed--all the while catering to a variety of physical abilities and food preferences. It would have been impossible to replicate this experience on my own. I'm so glad we booked!

Last March we had an opportunity to explore both islands with Active Adventures. Originally, we planned to start with South Island first but were advised by Active Adventures do North Island first, and we glad we followed their advice! Kauri trip prepared us to 3-day backpacking trip, which might be more difficult to do while still acclimatizing after long flight. We were lucky that our group again was small ( only 6 people for 2 guides) and all have a spirit for adventure and healthy competition. The landscape of South Island is very different from the North but not less beautiful. It did feel more rustic and wild. All our activities were well planned and contributed to wonderful experience. Our guides were fun, always smiling and encouraging! The food and lodging were excellent! It is hard to give a full justice of a beauty of Milford Sounds and a location of lodging was just picture perfect! The highlight of our trip was of course the last 2 nights staying in very remote location at Braemar Station, and seeing Mt. Cook and long white clouded from a bedroom and biking along Haiwea river under pouring rain. Overall, we had unforgettable experience and would recommend this trip with no doubt!

Everything about this trip made it a magical adventure … the people - those in our group and those we met along the way, the scenery, the food, the activities, and, of course, our guides! The combination of a week in each location was perfect. I have memories I will cherish forever!

I have been on numerous guided adventures on my own and with my family over the years. Our 2 weeks with Active Adventures was clearly among the best. I feel I experienced the essence of New Zealand and the South Island and have a desire to return to experience more. Our guides were truly exceptional. My wife and I can not stop singing their praises since our return.

This was one of the best adventures of my life. I have climbed Kilimanjaro and many other mountains, traveled to Antarctica, been on a number of African safaris, including a gorilla safari, seen belugas and polar bears in Manitoba, and have had adventures on all 7 continents, that is saying a lot. Every hour was exciting.

This trip will provide you with some of the most breathtaking scenery you will ever see. And, for most of us, it will also provide you with a sense of satisfaction at accomplishing one of the hardest things you will ever do physically.
I just finished the ten day version of this trip with my sister, my niece, and my granddaughter and it was an amazing adventure for us all. We are all in good shape: I am 68, my sister is 67, my niece is 39, and my granddaughter is 29. We had varying degrees of concern about the degree of difficulty. It is very hard, but so worth the effort. Just as you think you can't take another step up the trail, you come to an incredible vista, and the guides announce a little rest stop. The guides are coaches to keep you going, and they are loaded with information both historical and about nature. They let the group of 13 break into natural groups based on ability yet we all arrived each evening relatively together due to the stops along the way. Food was plentiful, snacks and water were always available. The prep meeting each evening for the next day was very helpful and accurate about what to expect.

For as long as I can remember New Zealand has been on the top of my traveling bucket list and I can confidently say it did not disappoint! Over what seemed like such a short time we made new friends, enjoyed some epic adventures, and fell in love with a place that we will definitely be returning to explore even more. This trip truly was and active adventure.

I added the first 5 days of Kauri to the end of the 14 day Rimu trip so I didn't get the full experience of the North Island; however, what I did experience was amazing and just beautiful scenery!

This trip was a last minute vacation for us. We are retired active adults and I planned a 2 week motorcycle tour on the South Island and wanted to do something on the North Island prior to our motorcycle tour. We are NOT hikers or even terrific outdoors people we are too young for bus tours and too old for backpacking around the country. The Active Adventures Kauri tour concentrated on the North island with a nice variety of activities not just hiking. Our guides Ruby and Kaleb were wonderful and made sure we were comfortable with the day’s activities. There were always options if we wanted to dial it down which we did on some days and thoroughly enjoyed exploring on our own. This tour is amazing,
I’d you are thinking of a trip to NZ you’d be CRAZY not to book an Active Adventures trip!

My husband & I had originally started planning a self-drive trip to New Zealand on our own, but quickly found ourselves overwhelmed with the multitude of things to do in New Zealand. Active Adventures saved the day! Their Rimu Adventure was a perfect first-timers introduction to the South Island. We did and saw more than we ever could have fit in on our own. Our guides, Dan & Mel, and our fun small group made the experience extra special! Our favorite experiences were the backpacking adventure in Nelson Lakes and kayaking Milford Sound, although everything was perfect! We were sad to leave but we WILL be back!

This trip was amazing and challenging at times. The places we hiked and paddled were stunning and peaceful. The guides went above and beyond making sure we had everything we need and kept us extremely well fed. I added on the 5 day Kauri and am already looking at doing another tour in South America this year. What an amazing experience!

Thank you for the trip of a lifetime!! The Kea was the perfect trip for my parents and our kids, alike. Greg and Laura couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for our family! They were absolutely incredible with our kids, providing motivation and entertainment on the longer hikes, fun kid-friendly activities through-out the trip, and even getting the kids involved with the cooking. Both of our kids said that it was there “BEST Christmas ever!!!”

Thank you also for tailoring the activities to meet different ages, interests, and fitness levels. New Zealand is an incredible place and we feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend our time there with Laura and Greg. Greg shared so much history and knowledge about New Zealand, while Laura made sure everything went smoothly and added all kinds of extra-special touches (like pre-making a homemade gingerbread house for our kids and her to assemble and decorate on New Years Eve). Both of them were amazing!! We can’t imagine a better company and guides to have a fun, active, and rewarding vacation. We’ll be back! Thank you again!
