This trip offered such a variety of experiences! I loved the physical challenges of many of the hikes. The kayaking, although tame, was a lovely experience. The one official day of cycling was easy enough that we could enjoy the spectacular scenery. We experienced such a variety of terrain, both while travelling by bus and during our explorations. Our guides were fun, skilled, strong, and great cooks- so much yummy food! This tour allowed us to experience so much of what NZ has to offer!

Our trip to Peru and Galapagos was absolutely spectacular. Active Adventures didn't miss a detail and their primary objective was to make us happy and safe in everything we did. Our family of four - my husband and me, and our two college-age kids, loved all the activity which included hiking, biking, kayaking, scuba, and snorkeling. We started every day early in the morning and didn't end until well after 8:00 pm. The trip also included planes, trains and automobiles that was much like the movie of that name, but no reason to dwell on that. I felt like we got to be with the local culture and were immersed in our South American environment. Our group was also fantastic and will hopefully travel again with our new friends.

The South Island is truly breathtaking and with Active Adventures one gets the benefit of a highly knowledgeable team, which not only shares the food, culture, and geo and biology knowhow to best experience the diversity the South Island offers. The key benefit of Active Adventures is their personnel – they know how to deal with unplanned stuff that happens in the outdoors.

Although the W Trek is very challenging, the pristine views and settings that one gets to experience are worth it.

After joining Active Adventures 5 years ago for the Rimu trip in New Zealand, we didn't think we'd ever have another experience that we would consider a trip of our lifetime. However, our Tortuga trip in the Galapagos, the last week of the year, guided by Pablo Valladares, exceeded all of our expectations. Not only were the sites and all the wildlife spectacular, but Pablo's knowledge of the history of the Galapagos, his storytelling, and his infectious excitement in showing us something new, different, and rare all the time, kept us waiting for the next surprise. There is not one part of the trip that I could think of changing, and while I'm sure that all the guides do a great job, I don't know how one could have a better experience than one guided by Pablo. When asked what was the best part of the trip, it was impossible to pick between the dolphins, the marine iguanas, the Sally lightfoot crabs, the blue-footed boobies, sea lions, etc. However, as Pablo and the rest of our group would know, the number one moment for me was at the top of our hike at the Sierra Negra Volcano, when he told us to look up quickly and see the "rare, endemic Galapagos Martin".......

Exactly as in the name - it was an active adventure! Amazing scenery on Doubtful Sound when we woke to a perfect morning after an overnight cruise made a good start to the trip. Guides Astrid and Simon were welcoming, very helpful and lots of fun! Walking short sections of three of the great walks was just right for us, with a beautiful stay at Milford Sound. Astrid's cooking was a delight at Te Anau.

We really enjoyed our New Zealand Adventure! Pim, Irene and Ash were awesome guides. We loved our trip to Crucible Lake and tramping around New Zealand! My kids especially enjoyed the small plane ride into Siberia. Milford Sound was beautiful! Irene's cooking was amazing! We also enjoyed some Moi stories by Pim and Ash was awesome on the hike. I wish I was there now! Leslie

This is our second trip with Active Adventures and it was, again, phenomenal. We were blessed with good weather, and good trip mates, but the reason we really like AA trips is because we are assured to see things and have experiences that the average person won't have. The hiking was challenging but beautiful, we had reservations on side trips and boat trips and always good tables in restaurants, great hotels... it's delightful to have everything taken care of. Gustavo was fantastic — constantly supportive, great company, well organized... just great. We loved it!

Active Adventures runs a tight ship. There is a LOT to see and do, and the guides and itinerary make it easy to enjoy NZ the way it should be enjoyed. What made the trip extra special was the unique accommodations throughout that brought you right into the stunning landscapes of the South Island. Our energetic and enthusiastic guides looked after us every step of the way.

...this was a trip that I'd always wanted to make, and it more than exceeded all my expectations: starting with excellent, knowledgeable and ever smiling & warm guides (I do see why they say 'legendary Kiwi hospitality' on their trip page), to the well planned & executed itinerary, the amazing food (the trip page never mentioned that the guides were excellent chefs!) and the incredible landscapes, hikes and kayaking experience - this trip had it all ! I did the Northbound trip itinerary, so we did Blenheim / Kaikoura before heading out on the Nelson Lakes backpacking section. Special mention here to the guides - Dan & Sally, who did their very best to prepare us for the backpacking section by going over specifics of equipment lists & so on. I'd never been backpacking before, and their willingness to spend time with us individually to go over our backpacks and what we were putting into it - this was super helpful. Both Dan & Sally were most knowledgeable, worked extra hard to ensure all of us were ever comfortable, kept the group smiling and in good cheer at all times even on the physically strenuous days (which I thoroughly enjoyed!), and I'd definitely go with them again if I had a choice.

For me, the highlight of the trip has to be Days 2 & 3 of the Nelson Lakes experience: the hike from Lakehead Hut all the way up to Angelus Hut - to me, this is the best hike I've done in my life - both for the views and the sense of accomplishment that you feel when you get all the way up there with your backpack :-) The walk (or tough hike, rather) along Robert's Ridge the next day - this rivaled our Day 2 hike for the sheer beauty and magnificence of the landscape that unfolds on either side of the mountain - breathtaking! I found my moments of peace and stillness on these hikes, and for me - this was the highlight of the trip (the Braemar Station stop towards the end & Milford Sound are a close second, I guess). Here, I'd like to specially commend the guides for quickly identifying the hiking ability/ level of each person in the group, each person's interest & inclination (walk quickly vs walk more gradually, taking in the landscape), and working very much within these parameters. Dan & Sally guided the hikes so that nobody really felt rushed (or slowed down) by the others - this is a fine art in itself, and it made a huge difference - really appreciate the guides for this. Thanks to this, I was able to find moments of solitude and peace.

The Queenstown stop-over forms a very pleasant interlude, given the physical nature of the itinerary. I do not really have a trip lowlight, so speak. I feel like Makarora & Manapouri are beautiful stop-overs too, and Active Adventures should play these spots up a bit more in their itinerary :-) Some of the drives are a bit long, but huge credit to Dan and the way the day is planned out - somehow, he figured out a way to not have us in the van for longer than 1.5 - 2 hrs at a time - there were interesting stop-overs in scenic towns and spots in-between.

Overall an incredible experience - I've seen and experienced much on this trip, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Special shout-out again to Dan & Sally - incredibly tough and hard working: I can safely say I also took away valuable life lessons from them, too.

Active Adventures for our Tui trip was amazing! We had a fantastic itinerary to see the South Island. And with the typical South Island weather, not all roads were possible. Ash, Astrid and Sal made sure we got to have a multitude of experiences outside of what was expected to make up for nature's wrath....we can't be more grateful for the behind the scenes adjustments that were made, to help us still always get the best of South Island New Zealand!
