Really wonderful trip that was well-planned and accommodated the needs/wants of the various participants. The food was outstanding—even on the hikes—where we all carried a portion of lunch with local cheeses, meat, breads and fruit. The hikes were rigorous but not so tiring that you couldn't enjoy the evenings. Hotels were charming and did not remove you from the local population like Mariotts and Hyatts tend to do. It was fun to participate in a range of outdoor activities and as an environmental scientist, hiking up to the glacier snouts was thrilling. All the guides were very competent and generally chill. Holly was a great leader who oversaw the group and took care of details seamlessly.

We can't say enough great things about our "Kea" trip this summer. The lead up to the trip was great and we had all the information we needed to get ready to travel. We are a family of four, mom, dad, and two boys aged 15 and 13. From the moment we met our guides (Mel and Pim - both absolutely fantastic people!) until we got back to the airport, we really wouldn't change a thing about our whole experience. To give you some insight into our incredible two weeks, within hours on the first day, Mel and Pim were out in the park with us in Methven playing soccer with our family and letting the boys teach them American football. We think it would be impossible to have a bad time in such a beautiful country with so much to do, but honestly the personalities and enthusiasm of Mel and Pim made the trip simply out-of this-world! By two days into the trip, our kids were playing their music over the aux in our mini-bus ("Frank" - as we learned named for the famous Antarctic explorer Frank Worsley), chatting and talking with Pim and Mel. Details-wise, everything was organized (but not over-structured), well-paced with more strenuous days mixed up with some more relaxed days and genuinely enjoyable -. Since we traveled in the NZ winter, our trip ended up being just our family of four - with the exception of one couple joining us for the Mount Aspiring Hut National Park hike - a great two days of hiking and spending the night in the middle of a sky full of stars. Given the size of our group, Mel and Pim were able to adjust and make some of the hikes more challenging, which the kids (and my husband and I) really appreciated as well. Everywhere we stayed was comfortable, clean and perfectly suited to what we needed, the 3 day stay in Queenstown was perfect to have in the middle of the trip a and we were able to hike, helicopter, kayak, zip line, boulder and more. Our family has traveled a lot of different places and we all agree that this trip was the best - we cannot recommend Active Adventures highly enough! Special kudos to Mel and Pim for making our family feel very welcome in NZ and being spectacular guides and hosts. On the way home, we were already trying to figure out what our next Active Adventures trip might be.

Wilson & Salvadore our fantastic, knowledgeable and funny guides went above and beyond (along with the entire team of chefs, porters & mules :)) to make our experience exciting, fun, comfortable, and very memorable in a unique way - exposing us to their culture, cuisine, and treasured communities. Wilson's passion for his country, culture and community enhanced our experience immeasurably. He bonded with our teenage boys over soccer and hiking experiences - going the extra mile to make sure they enjoyed the cuisine, even arranging with the chef prepare guinea pig authentically while on our trek. Wilson was so attentive to our needs and concerns, quick to provide solutions so we didn't miss a beat. In addition to showing us around Cusco City, he selected so many fantastic restaurants which showcased the local cuisine - which was out of this world! On our trek, we also had so many awesome gourmet meals - kudos to all of the chefs! We toured local markets to select local produce which the chef prepared for us on the trek. I felt so pampered on this hike, it was unbelievable. The Milky Way....I have a new appreciation for stargazing thanks to Wilson! Lastly, the Amazon was amazing as you can imagine. Pedro, our Amazon guide, and Wilson worked well together to help us locate wildlife. They exuded such passion and excitement about spotting wildlife for us, making sure we didn't miss a thing - our boys loved it all, as did we.

Back in February of 2018 i signed my family up with Active Adventures to do a hiking trip in Peru. I was a bit hesitant: I had never used Active Adventures…they had good online reviews, but who really knows until you have worked with them directly, right? Also, I have 2 boys, 12 and 14…and my wife and I are both reasonably fit but the hiking was going to take us above 15,000 feet…and the highest my family had ever climbed at was about 10,000. So that made me lose some sleep. Finally, I was just concerned about the logistics of such an enormous undertaking…would Active really handle the details well enough to make this trip worth the cost?
We now have returned to the US, and I can emphatically state that Active Adventures crushed it. There were a lot of reasons why this trip was a success…here are the top ones:
1.Wilson, our guide, was attentive to our special needs, willing to accommodate unusual requests, patient with some whining, able to balance diverse group abilities seamlessly, accommodating, funny, hugely knowledgeable, educational and was easily the main reason for the success. Here are some of the things he did to make the trip special:
a.He arranged for us to see a local soccer game, since our oldest son plays competitive soccer, we thought it would be cool to try to catch a local game. We saw a local Cusco based team (Ciencano) in a super fun environment…that was really different and special. Wilson arranged for the tickets and went with us…it was really memorable.
b.Wilson also arranged for a local doctor to visit us IN OUR HOTEL LOBBY…on 2 HOURS NOTICE…on a SATURDAY MORNING. Our son had an ear infection which we were concerned about…and Wilson and the Active Adventure team doctor were incredibly helpful. Problems were solved in a few hours with local pharmacies and scripts. He also gave us sound advice on whether to take Diamox (which we did on his advice, and which turned out to be great advice).
c.Wilson introduced us not just to the Incan relics and ruins and history, but also introduced us to local people along the way…including others on the Active team, but also many of the local residents that we met on our hike in the mountains. He taught us about their livelihood and challenges and customs, which made the trip very unique from anything I had ever experienced before. I will not soon forget the 4-year-old girl sheepherder working at 15000 feet, overseeing the family herd (and I will also not let my kids forget that!)
d.He was energetic and fun and accommodating in every way, every day.
e.He was incredibly knowledgeable himself about the history of the Incas, the local cultures, and the interactions between the local Peruvian people and the Spanish influences (good and bad). He was passionate about these topics, which made it meaningful.
f.Wilson was (and is) an incredible advocate for the Peruvian people and culture, and specifically for the indigenous people of the Cusco region. In the end of I thought of Wilson as the “Mayor of Lares†(the hiking destination we took). I think that label fits perfectly.
2.The Active team did a great job of dealing with some tricky flight rescheduling, caused by the local airlines changing their flight plans. We ended up reworking the agenda…but the Active team made this happen without having to change our original flights, which would have incurred thousands in change fees.
3.The accommodations were fantastic…hotels were clean, comfortable, centrally located, and had great staffs and good buffest style breakfasts, with enough options for some picky eaters.
4.The arranged tours went off without a hitch, and were staffed by friendly, knowledgeable and helpful assistants…all whom Wilson treated like family. These tours were unique (sightseeing, with lunch at a locally renowned restaurant…biking along the sacred valley, and with stops at local churches and shops to meet and learn about the local history.
5.The hiking was phenomenally well organized and more like “glampingâ€. We got hot lunches, hot water bottles for our sleeping bags when it was cold, our tents were always up and ready when we hit camp for the night, the food was just outstanding, even in camp. And in the end, the pace of the hiking and advice we got for altitude and acclimatizing from the Active team helped us hit the ultimate goal of hiking the entire Lares trail and “summitting†at 15,500 feet with relative ease….even my 12 year old crushed it.
6.Finally, our trip to the Amazon was amazing and easily the favorite destination for our kids. We all loved the individual cabins in the rain forest setting, the wildlife walks, the treetop canopy walk, the night time tarantula hunt, and the great buffest lunches and breakfasts at the main lodge. Oh and also, in addition to Wilson, we had the best Rainforest guide in a fellow named Pedro, from InkaTerra. Pedro was his own fountain of information and knowledge, and made the last part of the trip hugely enjoyable!!

I cannot say enough about this team that Active has assembled…from the pre-sales team, to the post sales accommodation team in New Zealand, to the local team that was assembled in Peru, Cusco and the Amazon…everyone was super professional, knowledgeable and accommodating. So was it all worth it? Absolutely…I would recommend this team to anyone!! (and I already have)

The trip was marvelous in every way. We covered so much ground, and got to see everything. Charming small towns, quaint hotels with character- and amazing views and scenery. We kept an aggressive schedule-which was necessary to complete the circuit in 12 days. The guides were superb-the mountain guide Fabi- knew the trails intimately, and kept us at our pace. The local logistics person Suzanne, had everything ready for the mornings, and our bags where they should be, ready at the new hotel. The Active Adventures guy Andy made sure everything went smoothly-and acted as a second guide-all the restaurants greeted us warmly, since they knew our guides. The hiking was top-notch we covered 65 miles- it was an amazing feat, but the way it was broken up and organized, they just made it doable. Little chunks at a time. It was rigorous- yet manageable, since you were doing it with a bunch of like-minded, fellow adventurers who were all flexible and fun.

As we live in Mexico, going to New Zealand was by itself a great adventure to us. The tour overstepped our expectations. The New Zealand's scenery is just amazing, the landscapes flooded our senses. All those mountains, rivers, lakes, snow, were really awesome. We were lucky to be with the same guides in both tours. Ellie and Elder were extremely gentle to us, they tried to really help all the time, we are a Mexican family and english is not our native tongue, however they made the effort to understand us and even speak Spanish with us, they even helped us in situations beyond their responsibilities when we had days off in Queenstown, and they cook simply delicious! I really miss their food, it was healthy and delicious food. The tour is really well planned because it begins lighter and it comes more difficult as the time passes, there is one day of great effort but then we have a rest day, so it is perfectly balanced. As we went in winter time, the places we visited were not as crowded as they used to be in summer time, so it was much better for us. We couldn't do one of the planned activities which was the Tongariro Crossing due to weather conditions, it was very windy that day and we think it is much better to keep us safe and don't expose ourselves to an accident.

The Dolomiti trip was amazing. It pushed me to the limits of my hiking ability given the steepness of some of the trails. The scenery was wonderful, the food amazing. The guides were very helpful and Ivan was an entire book of knowledge about the area. It was a great trip.

This trip is just superb. Of course, the destination is incredibly beautiful, but it was the tour that made this vacation so relaxing and care-free. They are on top of their game with everything running like clock-work and what feels like VIP treatment, from the hotels to the restaurants to the transportation. We never had to wait for, or worry about, anything. Instead, we could spend our time enjoying the activities and learning about this amazing destination.
