Classic Iceland Adventure

Iceland is a land of diversity! From incredible waterfalls, hot thermal pools, active volcanos, geysers, icebergs, glaciers, and beautiful birds, it is a land of extreme beauty. It's people are passionate about their country and one another. Active Adventures partnered with a local guide, Po'ra, who knew the island like the back of her hand. She would even add one more thing we just "had" to see. I also enjoyed being with the New Zealand guide, Andy Prill. He is one super human being with an extreme love of life who is eager for everyone else to experience it as well. I had several highlights. I especially enjoyed taking the ferry to the island off the south coast where we visited the museum and got a good feel of what the inhabitants experienced in 1973 when the volcano erupted --- a devastating time for them. Then we hiked to the top of two of the three active volcanos on the island which afforded incredible views. I also especially enjoyed waking on the black sand beach and feeling the black sand that was put there by the volcano of 2010, the one that caused all airports closed in Europe for a few weeks. The light colored basalt columns looked like organ pipes and, of course, were perfect for climbing and a group picture. Putting on crampons and walking on a glacier was another nightlight for me. At one point we had to attach ourselves by way of a carabiner to a robe where the uphill climb was a bit narrow and steep. It was thrilling and the guide was most helpful. Finally I very much enjoyed kayaking among the icebergs. It was chilly but we had been told to dress warmly and everyone was comfortable. Oh, I must also mention the waterfalls were spectacular. We even walked behind one. So cool. All in all The Lundi was an incredible experience. The length, one week, made it seem just right. A lot was packed into a short amount of time, however. I highly recommend this trip to anyone!!

I recently travelled (for the second time) with Active Adventures to Machu Picchu & the Amazon (the Jaguar). The trip was a dream come true. Due to some very fortunate circumstances, I got to enjoy an intimate journey along the Lares Trail through the Sacred Valley of the Incas for 3 glorious days before reaching Machu Picchu on the 4th day and joining back up with my group. The Lares Trek was rugged and open with varied terrain and breathtaking views for as far as the eye could see. We passed llamas, alpacas, villagers, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, gorgeous eucalyptus woods, quinoa fields, old farm houses from the Inca period, and so much more. Every step led to a new insights of the old world, and my brilliant guide Erick was always ready with his narration of the history of the land and people. The 3-course dining and camping were also very good, and my hosts were gracious and efficient. We even made a stop to Aguascalientes (hot spring), where I got to enjoy a very relaxing soak.
Following Machu Picchu, the Amazon adventure for 2 days was also very exciting. I personally loved the heavy exotic heat of the days and warm-cool nights. (A dip in the swimming pool and a memory foam bed in the cabin made for a magnificent sleep). Live tarantulas, capybaras, sloths, owls and green orange trees were firsts for me, and the relaxing pace made for a perfect wind down to the adventure.
All in all, this trip was a MUST DO. I’m already thinking of my next AA journey.

Hiking Machu Picchu has been on my husband's bucket list for years & as he's not getting older (78), I finally said yes, I'll go with him. Glad we went with Active Adventures as they carried our supplies, looked after our meals and had our tents set up at the end of each day. The porters are phenomenal. We sure appreciated the warm wash water after our hikes and hot water bottles on cold nights. Our group leader Eric was very organized and adapted to changes to our itineraries which were out of his control. Prior to this trip, I had no plans to visit South America and thought I was finished camping years ago but the views along the Inca Trail were amazing and so is the history. Team work by Active Adventures staff/porters/cook made the trip enjoyable.

What an incredible experience we had! The trip was perfectly organized, the accommodations great, the food fantastic, especially all the fish we had and then there was Pepo! A truly gifted guide, he had an encyclopedic knowledge of everything Galapagos, was always attentive to the group and had us laughing always. Don’t miss this trip!

This trip was truly a trip of a lifetime for me. Not only did I see sights about which I had dreamed my whole life, I got to experience everything close up and personal. The Peru segment was fantastic - only vacation I have been on where I came back in better shape than I left - the hikes were glorious and wonderfully challenging. Seeing Machu Picchu was more than I ever expected. The Galapagos are a water and marine life lovers dream. Best snorkeling we have ever done, and the different islands were all so unique. I don't have enough good things to say about this tour. Well organized, educational and most of all, fun! We don't usually take tours, but this one made us feel like we hit the jackpot. Excellent!

We travel....a lot, and this was an epic adventure! What we saw was amazing but even more impressive was the logistics behind our travel. Our trip was flawless. All the transportation and local guides were on time and extremely nice. Our main guides, Sergio and Tambo were very special people. Wonderfully knowledgeable and went out of their way to make our trip special. I will highly recommend Active Adventure to everyone.

This was a great week long trip with all the South Island highlights. There’s enough time to create your own side adventures but Active has everything covered for you if you don’t want to do any extra planning on your own. We have used other tour companies in other countries and this was one of the top experiences for us.

Nepal was everything I expected and then a whole lot more. Yes, the mountains were huge, the colours vibrant and the trekking sublime. But also, the local Nepali people were beautiful, friendly and generous. Nepal is one of the poorest nations on earth, but you wouldn't know it when you sit down and have a masala tea with the porters and the tea house staff. Their nature is to treat you as a welcomed guest and when you make a little effort to learn their language and interact, it makes the whole experience so much richer. The best part about travelling with Active is that they have developed an amazing model where a western (usually Kiwi) trip leader works alongside a Nepali guide and team of porters - this balance works so well to bridge the cultural gap and educate us (the guests) on a deeper level. I'd go back in a heartbeat!
